LinksPassword Protection

Password-Protect Your Links

Password protection lets you put a gate in front of any short link. Visitors see a Brevr-branded prompt asking for a password before they reach the destination. Only people with the password get through.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to add a password to any short link
  • Which use cases benefit most from password-protected links
  • How analytics work on gated links

How Password Protection Works

When a visitor clicks your link, they land on a password prompt instead of going straight to the destination. They type the password you set, and Brevr redirects them to the destination URL. Anyone without the password cannot proceed. Analytics record every visit — including visitors who arrive at the prompt, whether or not they enter the password correctly.

  1. Open the link editor for an existing link, or start creating a new link.
  2. Scroll to the “Security” section in the editor panel.
  3. Toggle Password Protection on.
  4. Type your chosen password into the field that appears.
  5. Save the link.
  6. Share the link and send the password separately — for example, in a follow-up email or message.

Password-protected links work anywhere you need to share something privately without building a full login system.

Use CaseExample
Client deliverablesCampaign report only the client can open
Pre-launch previewProduct page shared before public launch
Gated contentResource link sent with password in a separate email
Internal linksTeam-only resources without a login system

How to Change or Remove a Password

You can update or remove a password at any time without breaking the short link itself.

  1. Open the link editor for the protected link.
  2. Scroll to the Security section.
  3. Type a new password to change it, or toggle Password Protection off to remove the gate entirely.
  4. Save your changes.

The link URL stays the same. Anyone who had the old link can still use it — they will just need the new password, or no password at all if you removed protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Brevr tracks every visit to the password prompt page, including visitors who never enter the correct password. Your dashboard shows total visits, unique visitors, device types, and locations as usual.

Yes. Each link has its own independent password. There is no shared or workspace-level password — every protected link is configured individually.

What happens if someone enters the wrong password?

The prompt reloads and shows an error message. The visitor can try again. There is currently no limit on the number of password attempts.

Is the password visible to anyone inside my Brevr workspace?

Yes. Anyone on your team with access to the link editor can see and change the password. If you need stricter access control, manage team permissions at the workspace level.

Can I use password protection with a custom domain?

Yes. Password protection works the same way on links using your own custom domain as it does on brevr.one links.

What if I forget the password I set?

Open the link editor and scroll to the Security section — the password you set is visible there. You can also replace it with a new one at any time.

Step 5: Confirm the Padlock Icon in the Dashboard

Return to your link dashboard. Password-protected links display a padlock icon alongside the link entry so you can identify gated links at a glance.

Step 6: View the Visitor Password Prompt

Open the short link in a private browser window. You should land on the Brevr-branded password prompt instead of the destination. Enter the password to confirm the redirect works correctly.
